The New World - Exhibition for a Mantelpiece
“I had a book that was given to me when I was 21.
It was a very beautiful book. . . quite big and it contained some of the drawings and water colours of Paul Klee.
The water colours were in double pages so you could slip them out. . . and attached to the back cover were mounts you could take out and slip the paintings into and then pin them on the wall.
I thought that was quite wonderful . . . to be able to take something from a book without destroying it and then have a chance to see it in a totally different setting.”
Alan Smith in conversation with Derek Guthrie – June 2016
